The Bluethumb Artist Group Popup  Exhibition brings together six South East Queensland Artists, who met through Facebook and their mutual association with Bluethumb, the leading Australian online art platform. They are driven by a desire to produce skilled and beautiful works,  inspired by  and reflecting the world in our own unique way. This eclectic collection is an exciting display of quality work, also available for sale at http://www.bluethumb.com.au.

That does sound exciting, doesnt it? And it happened so fast. Jamie was looking for a Gallery where he could exhibit his work with some other Bluethumb artists and get it sponsored by Bluethumb. He approached Bluethumb and they thought it was a great idea and would fully support Jamie’s plans. I mentioned to Jamie that I would be interested in taking part in this exhibition and even though he didn’t know me he was happy for me to be part of it.

And then it all just happened. After some struggle to find a Gallery that would accept our exhibition in a 4 to 5 week timeframe, Jugglers Art Space at the Valley came to the rescue.

They were happy to work with us and Bluethumb, and after sorting out a few administrative problems we had the go ahead to start our exhibition in 3 week, on 13th October, a Friday!

That must be Good Luck for us.

I have decided to exhibit my newest pouring experiments as I can show a body of Art that has a theme and is consistent in size und looks

Preparing for my first SOLO Exhibition at the Glenrock Art  Gallery in Esk in November 2018, I was asked to make some smaller paintings available to reach a wider public interest, so the idea to come up with original paintings in Greeting Card Size was born.

First I planned to cut the background cards for the original paintings by myself, as I expected to only have a few cards available, but once I started I found more and more ways to incorporate some of my pourings.

It was not easy to find a supplier that sold blank Greeting Cards, including envelopes and cellophane slips that fitted the cards dimensions  at a reasonable cost. After some time consuming searching of the market, K-Mart came to the rescue.

And here they are:

Original Acrylic Paint Greeting Cards

Today I had no other planned commitments so I decided that this is the day I will experiment with pouring dirty mixes of Acrylic. First thing I needed for this was a level table top. As my work table has a slight lean, the acrylic often ran off to one side and I had to turn the canvas constantly to avoid the runoff.

So an IKEA table top I found a couple of weeks ago at the kerbside collection was just the thing I needed. It is about 80cm by 60cm in dimensions and about 3 cm thick so would not warp.

I screwed one small round head screw into every corner of the flat top as 4 legs which I could adjust by screwing in each screw as needed and leveled the IKEA top on top of my worktable that way.

The first piece I poured was just on a small leftover piece of hard board. I started with preparing the paint by mixing it with Floetrol (available at Bunnings) as a painting medium, a bit of water and by adding a couple of drops of Silicone. I mixed white, green, blue and pink and just dripped the paint across the short side of the board. Then I dragged the paint from top t bottom with a small plastic cut off I used as a scraper.

And this was the result:

The second piece I did was a larger piece of hardboard, about A4 size. This time I added a bit of golden Acrylic but left the pink Acrylic off. Disappointingly the Gold only looks like yellow and not like gold at all. But the overall effect is not too bad.

As a lot of acrylic paint was dripping of the board when I used the scraper to drag it through the paint, I collected this run off paint on a third smaller left over board I had from a previous pouring test

As this runoff paint was thoroughly mixed I was surprised that it still formed cells, but only very small and delicate ones.

Then I decided that I will try and see what happens when I pour acrylic on thick cardboard paper. As some of the hardboards I used for the trial are very thick and I can’t use the results in a pre purchased frame. If it would work on cardboard it would be easy to frame.

When I first poured the mix on cardboard I was surprised how good it worked, but then the card board started to welt and buckle and the paint collected in the deeper spots of the board which didn’t look the way I had planned it.

but after drying and cropping the paper I actually got a usably result and it will be easy to frame.

So altogether it was a pretty useful experiment i did today. I still will experiment with different papers, like watercolour paper or even photo paper to see which one is the best paper for pouring.

The Somerset Bendigo Bank Art Awards is a biennial Art Awards organised and presented by the Somerset Art Society Inc. A dedicated team of volunteers are proud to present an even more exciting event this year with the introduction of a new theme prize, The Somerset Region Theme, for artworks that celebrate our beautiful region.

Our Major Sponsor this year is the Bendigo Bank – Fernvale & Lowood. The Art Awards also functions with the support of the Somerset Regional Council, through the Regional Art Development Fund, as well as many other sponsors throughout the Somerset region.

During the 2017 Somerset ART Awards, SASI Members were planning to produce a set of Tarot Cards to be on sale during the exhibition time at the Somerset Civic Centre in Esk. The project includes 22 art works by 22 individual artist, each representing one of the Major Arcana cards.

Sasi will also organise a print from each painting to produce a sets of 22 Tarot cards.
Hopefully SASI can sell the sets for $20 each during the Art Awards.
My contribution to the Awards was Tarot Card #21 ‘The World’ and this original painting will be offered for sale at the Somerset Civic Centre in Esk during the Art Awards together with the other 21 Tarot Card paintings. I can’t wait to see what the other 21 Artists have created.
